Hey everyone! Katie here!!
Today is March 5th and exactly a year ago today the season four finale of Star Wars Rebels premiered, bringing the much-loved show to an end.
To celebrate the amazing show and how much it meant to so many people today, using the hashtag #rebelsremembered, fans are taking to social media and sharing cosplays, fanart, fanfiction, edits, favorite moments, and memories.
So, I thought I would take a moment to share some of my favorite things about Rebels today.
Ahsoka Lives
When Ahsoka walked away from the Jedi order at the end of season five of the Clone Wars we didn't know where her story would go. She reappeared at the end of The Seige of Lothal introducing her to Rebels and her story continued. Ahsoka grew so much between the events of Rebels and Clone Wars (partly chronicled in the YA novel Ahsoka by E. K. Johnston.) that at first glance she appears to be a completely different character. However, as we see more of her we begin to realize that while she has become wiser and more mature she hasn't lost her spark or spunk.
When Ahsoka faces her former master at the end of Twilight of The Apprentice her story seems to come to a close when Vader emerges at the end on his own. Thus began a new wave of"Ahsoka Lives" While episode after episode past and Ahsoka didn't appear some fans began to lose hope. Had Ahsoka really been struck down by Vader during their duel on Malachor?
Then came the episodes Wolves and a Door and The World Between Worlds. When Ezra Bridger discovers a world beyond space and time he stumbles upon a doorway where he sees the duel between Ahsoka and Vader. Fear for Ahsoka's life as the temple crumbles around the two Ezra reaches out his hand and pulls Ahsoka through, quite possibly saving her life. While Ahsoka and Ezra a quickly forced to part ways thanks to the schemes of the Emperor, we know Ahsoka survives the parting because of one last moment.
The season four finale. With seconds remaining in the episode Sabine Wren turns, ready to set out on a journey to find Ezra and behind her stands Ahsoka. White staff in hand and with full Gandalf the White style, She looks wiser and older, but
still prepared, ready to embark on yet another journey. But she lived. The moment came as a surprise to many fans, even those who fully expected Ahsoka Tano'smstory to continue. In fact, it came as a surprise to Ashley Eckstein herself, The voice of Ahsoka Tano! Since Ahsoka didn't speak during the scene no recording was needed and Filoni surprised her as well by adding the moment.
The moment is powerful, in the universe and out of it. The moment reminds us that Ahsoka is a survivor. That it will take more than betrayal, more than an entire galaxy hunting her, more then her former master turned against her, more than the dark side, more than even death itself (remember the Mortis arc in the Clone Wars) to finish Ahsoka Tano. Ahsoka Tano is a character whose story will be told long after it is finished being written. Through the Force, through our memories, and through our hearts, Ahsoka Tano will live, in a way not many other characters can.
We're a Crew, in Some Ways a Family:
The crew of the Ghost isn't just another group of characters.
They are a family brought together by
the battle around them. Each character has their own past, their own struggles, their own demons. Each of them is broken in a different way. But through their brokenness, they become far more than just another group of Rebels, they become a family.
Let's start with Hera Syndulla, a sort of mother to the younger members of the crew. She grew up on Ryloth, the daughter of a resistance leader, Cham Syndulla.
She was born into war, rebellion ran in her blood. But she left Ryloth and her family behind. Hera is a leader, she runs the show on the Ghost, calling the shots and making the tough decisions. She puts the others before herself, always. She refuses to compromise her values and will sacrifice anything, including her life to protect those she cares about. She always seems to make the right decision, even when it isn't the easy one. Because as she puts it "If all you do is fight for your own life then your life is worth nothing."
Caleb Dume (better known as Kanan Jarrus) a former Jedi Padawan, now just a broken man on the run. Kanan grows so much throughout the course of Rebels. Transforming from rash and reckless to a wise Master. At first, he isn't really sure who he is, his entire identity was wrapped around the Jedi after all, but through all four seasons he discovers himself and learns who he truly is. as the Bendu puts it "Only You can change yourself." and Kanan does just that. In the end, just as his Master sacrifices herself for him, he sacrifices himself to save his crew that has become his family.
Zeb and Chopper are two characters who might be looked upon as "insignificant" however both of them still have important lessons to teach us. Zeb works though so much, especially with Agent Kallus. The two begin the show as mortal enemies and end as a sort of brothers. Zeb learns about forgiveness, he learns to let go of things that can't be changed, and he learns that sometimes you have to look at the other side of the story to understand. Chopper might even seem less important. (While I may be biased since he is my favorite droid) I think he is still a very important character. While he may be grumpy and hard he truly cares for each member of the Ghost crew one of the first things that come to mind when I think of Chopper is this touching moment.
After Kanan's death, Hera goes for some alone time, trying to work through all her emotions. Chopper follows and comforts her, taking her hand in his mechanical one in a touching gesture. Hera saved Chopper's "life" when she was a child and the bond between them has always been strong, but at this moment we really get to see it.
Sabine Wren is a Mandalorian, a people group well known for their warlike ways. On Mandalore family is everything. There are clans, families, houses. Everything revolves around your honor, armor, and family. Sabine isn't like everyone else. When she was young she created a weapon that allowed the Empire to gain control over her people. When she realized her mistake she left the empire and her family, determined to figure things out on her own, where she couldn't hurt anyone else she cared about. Instead of fitting in she chose to stand out, painting her armor bright colors and creating explosives that sprayed brightly colored paint everywhere. But she was still alone. And then the Ghost crew came along. She fought beside them, determined to take down the Empire
That had stolen so much from her. But she didn't trust them right away. Not for a long time in fact. Afraid they would leave her just like everyone else she had ever cared about she kept herself distant. But eventually, she realized they weren't going to leave her. They were going to stand beside her because that's what family does. As Kanan puts it "You've come a long way in a very short time. Where you go from here is up to you, but know that this family is going to stand by you no matter what you choose." at that moment, she wasn't alone anymore.
Now Ezra, out little blueberry son Ezra Bridger. Ezra Bridger starts out a street rat. a thief (Space Aladdin I think I've heard him called a few times) He doesn't trust easily either and he's just out to survive. But as he starts to realize the Empire's impact more, and as he starts to want to help. He learns to be a Jedi, he learns to stand up for others and himself, he learns to work together. He inspires others to work together too, the way he puts it "Stand up together. Because that's when we are strongest- as one." And in the end, even though he isn't there to see it, Lothal, his homeworld, is free from the Empire because of him. He led his friends to free his planet. He led his planet to free itself. He became a spark that lit the fire, continuing the work that his parents started when he was little. And it affected the entire galaxy.
Final Thoughts
Rebels was such an amazing show. It's characters left a mark on us in a way not many do. It gave us characters to relate to and an incredible story to follow. I can't imagine the fandom without this incredible show and I'm so grateful that it was created. What are your favorite moments fromStar Wars Rebels? Do you have a character who means more to you than any of the others? Comment down below or on our Instagram post! We'd love to hear what you loved about Rebels! And if you have fanart, cosplays or anything else you want to share using the hashtag #rebelsremembered so everyone else can see it too! (Just be sure to check before sharing if it someone else's art or cosplay!) Thank you to all the artists and cosplayers featured in this post for letting us share your work (and for creating it in the first place!)
That's all for today but I'd like to close with a Rebel's
quote. More specifically an Ezra one. I think it sums up what Rebels taught us. Because if we really pay attention it taught us a lot.
"I don't mean about the Force, I mean about life. About being a good person, that's what you've taught me."
And even a year later it continues to connect fans as we share our favorite stories and moments. We may not have gotten any new episodes for a year, but Rebels certainly hasn't ended. As long as we love the character and the stories. As long as we continue to share our favorite parts. As long as we can learn from it, create from it, and gain joy from it. Rebels is still alive.
